 Nolan Meadnis

Hi, I'm Nolan Meadnis, Founder and Lead Investigator for OCPS - the Orange County Paranormal Society. Here I'm going to cover some of the most faq about our paranormal investigations and the paranormal in general. Additional Q&A's will be added frequently. If you have a question that isn't addressed here, feel free to email us:

Q: How long do your investigations take?

A: Since we do our investigations on our free time, usually they will be on a Friday or Saturday night for about 6 hours. Depending on the case and the amount of activity present, we will stay longer and possibly come back for another day.

Q: Can we invite friends and family over to watch the investigation?

A: Although we can't force you to not have visitors, we strongly recommend not to. Too many people around an investigation can cause false results, or no results at all.

Q: How long will it take to receive results from the investigation?

A: That depends on how long the investigation lasts. It can be anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks.

Q: What causes cold spots?

A: It is said that when an entity manifests itself, it is drawing the energy out of the air around it, causing the temperature in that area to drop.

Q: What is an EVP?

A: EVP stands for Electronic Voice Phenomena. They are sounds an entity makes that are picked up by our digital recorders. Since the recorders are more than 10 times sensitive than the human ear, they can pick up audio that we aren't able to hear in real time.

Q: Do all spirits or ghosts want to hurt me?

A: No. Most of the time, the spirit will make noise or move things just to get your attention. They want you to know they are there. Other times, a spirit will do those things just to get a kick out of scaring you, but they mean no harm.

Q: I've heard there are different types of hauntings. What are they?

A: There are 4 basic types of hauntings:

1. Residual Haunt - This is the most common type of haunting. It is a repeated event that occurs over and over, kind of like a broken record player. It can happen the same time every day, week, or year. Usually, it involves something the entity was used to doing, like walking down stairs. Other times, it can be a traumatic event reliving itself.

2. Intelligent Haunt - This is where the entity or entities are aware of their surroundings and know you're there. They are trying to communicate with you. They may be attached to the property, an item, or to a particular person.

3. Poltergeist - This is perhaps the most terrifying haunting simply because it involves larger objects being moved and louder voices. It is also the rarest. It is said that in most cases, it is caused by teenage females who unknowingly control the energy around them.

4. Demonic Haunt - This is an inhuman entity. They often make contact by scratching, pushing, and hitting. Characteristics include hot spots, a smell of sulfuric acid or rotted flesh, and dark shadowy figures. Religious provocation is the best known way to rid these entities.

Q: Your most recent investigations weren't very long. Why is that?

A: In a perfect world, we would investigate every location until we felt is was time to pack up. Unfortunately, some locations have time restrictions, such as businesses. We must work around their schedule and get in as much investigating as we are allowed.

Q: I want my location investigated. Do you have to show it on your website?

A: Absolutely not. Your privacy is our primary concern. Our confidentiality form will allow you to select the level of information you want released. Even though paranormal investigating is becoming more mainstream, we understand that some people aren't comfortable having others know that they either believe in the paranormal or that they had their home or business investigated.
